PRESS
"centering blasé, perfectly over-it vocals (think Su Tissue or Lizzy Mercier Descloux at their most detached) which function as carefully structured lines for strangled no wave guitar and clattering drums to cross in impulsive strokes of color, only for the whole affair to be détourned as “Another Persuasion” on the B-side, with Ana da Silva of the RAINCOATS(!) applying spacious dub echo and glitchy electro accents to smooth out some of the more anxious edges of the original source material. ... Buy the physical record; the visuals and writing included in the packaging/insert are a crucial part of the FAKE LAST NAME experience—keeping the “art” in art-punk."
-- Erika Elizabeth, MRR
"Fake Last Name’s latest 7” gives its listener just a taste of what Ronni What has in store for the future. Ronni What crafted all instrumentation on Three Persuasion Domains, and it sounds as if you’re in the room with them while they read aloud their personal dialogue of their days. Lyrically diaristic with lines such as “my mind is made up,” which appears in several intervals throughout this record, leaves one wondering
if What has convinced themselves or if the listener must chant along in order to make up their mind as well. The track “Rain Come” is an introspective march that could willingly go on forever with its synthetic drums jabbing along beautifully placed arpeggiations reminiscent of Mamman Sani. “Gadfly” has been released previously via Tough Gum, but its placement on this 7” shows how lyrically pertinent Fake Last Name’s work is as a matter of poetry, with the music coming secondary. Lines like,
“I’m grasping onto thin air, I’m looking into a small tunnel of information” suggest that
everyday escapism is easiest in the digital realm, but Fake Last Name is able to find their way out of it by creating these mantras that must be heard and cherished"
